Cultivation techniques for producing meat and dairy products without the need for animal slaughter have been under development for several years, with Singapore and the United States having already approved the sale of ‘meat’ produced through these novel processes. The United Kingdom might have been a bit slow to catch up, but openly embracing this signifies the launch of a new strategy supported by a £2 billion investment, aiming to position the UK at the forefront of this emerging industry. Over the next decade, the government seeks to harness the potential of biotechnology by not only guiding medical advancements but also encouraging more sustainable fuels and, notably, revolutionizing food production—an area of particular interest. The government is favorably disposed towards advancing the production of cell-cultivated or “lab-grown” meat.
