The EU Commission defines erythritol as a polyol obtained through fermentation with safe and suitable food-grade osmophilic yeasts such as Moniliella pollinis or Moniliella megachiliensis, followed by purification and drying. EFSA, based on the available evidence, has determined that erythritol is not genotoxic and that there is no evidence of a link between the consumption of foods containing this sweetener and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease or related risk factors. Alongside establishing a new Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI), EFSA has confirmed the continued requirement for the label warning “excessive consumption may produce laxative effects” on products containing erythritol.
