In Germany, a deposit system for disposable beverage packaging was initially introduced in January 2003, primarily for environmental reasons. The mandatory deposit was subsequently expanded to include a growing range of beverages and beverage packaging in the following years. As of January 1, 2024, single-use plastic packaging for milk and mixed milk beverages containing at least 50% milk is also included within the scope of the deposit system.
