Between September 2nd and December 1st, 2023, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) outbreaks were reported in domestic (88) and wild (175) birds across 23 countries in Europe. The circulation of H5 avian influenza viruses of the 2.3.4.4b clade continues to pose a low risk of infection for the general population in the European Union and the European Economic Area. While the risk of infection remains low to moderate for individuals exposed to infected birds or mammals (wild or domestic), various situations may arise depending on the level of exposure.
